The exhibition ‘Jewels of Transcendence’ displays more than 400 treasures from the Chengxutang and Mengdiexuan collections of ornaments and religious objects from the Himalayan regions dating from the 13th to 20th centuries.

The exhibition evidences the cultural exchanges that existed from the mid -13th century between the diverse array of peoples in the Himalayan region. Tibetans, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Gurkhas and Ladakhs were bound together not only by their common landscapes, but also by political, military, commercial and cultural exchanges, and, most importantly, by similar religious beliefs. This is evidenced in the motifs and materials used in many of the stunning works on display.

We are extremely fortunate to have two expert guides for this exhibition viewing: Dr Xu Xiaodong, Associate Director of the Art Museum and Curator of the exhibition, and Betty Lo who, together with her husband Kenneth Chu, has built up the Mengdiexuan collection of Chinese antiquities over several decades. Their collection covers a wide range of artistic areas and decorative arts but is well known for its focus on gold, silver and jewelled accessories and adornments.

We expect the guided viewing to last approximately one hour. There should then be time to view exhibits in the museum independently. We do hope you can join us on 17th November.
